Presentation title :

First, I will give an introduction to the School of Food Science and Nutrition in the University of Leeds. Followed by a brief overview of research in the school with case studies introduction. Finally I will focus on the human health research on aflatoxins and mycotoxins conducted by my research group.

Research profile :

Prof Gong has a strong track record in assessing the impact of food mycotoxins (aflatoxin and fumonisin primarily) and other environmental toxins on child health using molecular epidemiological approaches. This includes the use of biomarkers to measure exposure of toxins and intervention effectiveness; to develop effective intervention strategies to reduce the toxins in food and prevent public health. Her long-standing work in Africa highlights the impact of mycotoxins on child health like growth impairment. Through her research funded by the BBSRC, Royal Society, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, she has built a large collaboration network with researchers from Africa and China. She served as an expert for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and China FSA on food safety risk assessments. Her current research also includes exploring solutions for scaling-up intervention of  reducing the double burden of malnutrition in children, and investigating how to enhance agri-food policies to tackle the climate change impact on food safety and nutrition insecurity in African countries.
