On Apr.10, Dr. Angel Medina Vaya from Cranfield University Visited Jiangsu University. Dr Medina gave us an excellent lecture on the relationship between climate change and food safety, entitled Climate change and food safety: effect of forecasted environmental changes on fungal toxins. He introduced the global climate evolution model and the environmental fluctuations related with climate change. The effects of climate change on mycotoxigenic fungi was analysed.

Dr Medina obtained his PhD degree in Microbiology in 2007 at the University of Valencia (Spain). He was awarded the prize for the best PhD Thesis by the University of Valencia based on the novelty and quality of his research in 2008. Subsequently, he worked for almost 2 years in the food industry until he obtained a post-doctoral grant from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation to work in the Applied Mycology Group at Cranfield University (UK) and then a Marie Curie individual Fellowship from the EU 7th FP. He then joined Cranfield and from October 2018 he is Senior Lecturer in Food Mycology.

Dr Medina is currently leading research in relation to Climate Change impacts on fungal diseases of plants. He is focused on pre- and post-harvest approaches to enable fit for purpose accurate risk predictions, control and minimisation strategies for mycotoxin contamination and food waste under current and expected climate change conditions in key staple chains. This is complimented by work on the mechanisms used for ecophysiological tolerance to environmental stress and transcriptome (RNAseq) of mycotoxigenic moulds.

Parallel with this, Dr. Medina is responsible the Programme Director of AgriFood suite of MSc Courses.

Dr Medina is Editor for Fungal Biology (Elsevier), Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiology (fungal interactions). He has published 75 peer reviewed papers in peer reviewed scientific journals and has an H-index of 26.

Since January, Dr. Media has been appointed the Chair of the Fungal Biology Research (FBR) Committee of the British Mycological Society (BMS).
