Introduction to Dr. Minglin Ma
Minglin Ma is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca. He received a B.A. in Chemical Engineering from Tsinghua University, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He joined Cornell University in 2013. His research has focused on biomedical engineering; he received many awards, including: Junior Faculty Award from American Diabetes Association, Non-tenured Faculty Award from 3M Co., Individual Biomedical Research Award from Hartwell Foundation, Bio-manufacturing Award and Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Young Innovator Award from American Society of Biomedical Engineering. He has published more than 40 academic papers for journals, including Science, PNAS, Nature Materials, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters.

Topic: Developing Advanced Biomaterials for Cellular Medicine (and Food Safety)
Abstract: Cellular medicine holds enormous potential to treat many challenging diseases and biomaterials play an important role in many aspects of cellular medicine including cell manufacturing, engineering and delivery. In this talk, I will discuss two specific examples. First, I will describe some smart designs of micro scale cell culture systems for advanced bio-manufacturing applications. Using small intestinal or ganoids as a model, I will show how advanced microcapsule designs may facilitate the large-scale manufacturing of such important biological units. Second, I will describe some new translational biomaterials for therapeutic cell delivery, particularly for type 1 diabetes treatment. I will show how we converted a concept to a targeted clinical trial in partnership with Novo Nordisk. Lastly, if time permits, I will discuss some on-going work on biomaterial designs for food safety applications.
